Ghana and Jamaica Plan a December Homecoming Festival

Ghana has announced a new Jamaica Homecoming Festival, set to take over Accra on December 4th and 5th this year. The event is being spearheaded by reggae artist Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage, and it brings together music, culture and heritage tourism under one roof, inviting people of Caribbean and wider African descent to reconnect with Ghana as a place of origin rather than simply a holiday destination.

What makes this festival stand out is how far beyond the stage it reaches. Organisers have linked it to Ghana's existing Operation Boafo aid programme with Jamaica and to ongoing talks about labour and trade links between West Africa and the Caribbean, including agriculture and logistics. Veteran Ghanaian musician Rex Omar summed up the spirit of it best, telling the gathered crowd, "You are not tourists here. You are citizens returning to the motherland."
