Ghana Launches Diaspora Fund to Help Citizens in Crisis Abroad

Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced this week that the government is setting up a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund, a dedicated pot of money to help citizens who find themselves in crisis while living or travelling abroad. Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, he said the fund would let officials move quickly when Ghanaians overseas need emergency support, rather than scrambling for resources each time a new crisis breaks.
The need is real: since 2025, nearly 5,000 Ghanaians have had to be repatriated from difficult situations in countries including Libya, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Cambodia and Algeria. "This is precisely why it has become imperative to establish the Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund," Ablakwa said, describing it as a sustainable emergency mechanism rather than a one-off response. For a government that has watched its citizens abroad face everything from stranded travel to unsafe labour conditions, it's a quiet but significant shift towards taking care of its own, wherever they are.
It's a reminder of something the diaspora already knows in their bones: looking after family back home, or family who've gone abroad, never really stops. At Zan Shipping, we see it every week in the barrels packed with rice, tinned food, clothes and small gifts, in the boxes sent ahead of a visit home, and in the phone calls that start with "just checking you got everything." Government funds and family barrels do different jobs, but they come from the same place — people making sure the people they love are looked after, no matter the distance.
If you've got a barrel or a box waiting to go to family in Ghana or anywhere else back home, we'd love to help you get it there safely and on time — barrels start from just £85, and right now it's buy 3 get 1 empty free.
