Jamaica Takes Its Case for Reparations to the King

This month, a Jamaican government delegation led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange travelled to London to formally press the case for slavery reparations from Britain. The petition, addressed to King Charles III and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, asks for legal guidance on three questions: whether the enslavement of African people was ever lawful under English common law, whether it violated international law, and whether the UK now carries a legal obligation to provide remedy. Jamaica's government has put the figure it believes it is owed at around $10 billion.

The petition itself was first raised back in June 2025, but this month's visit brought it back to the front pages on both sides of the Atlantic. The British government's position has not moved: a spokesperson for the then-Prime Minister's office said in 2024 that Britain "would not be paying for slavery and would also not apologise for it," and Buckingham Palace has acknowledged the petition without taking a position on it. For Minister Grange and her delegation, the visit was about keeping the historical record - and the conversation - firmly open.

For a lot of us in the Jamaican community here in the UK, this story isn't just something happening in the news - it runs through our own family histories. It's there in the stories our grandparents told, in old photographs kept safe in a drawer, in the documents and keepsakes that get carefully wrapped and tucked into a barrel alongside the rice, the seasoning, and the school shoes. History and home travel together in the same parcel more often than people realise.

Whatever you're sending home to Jamaica this month - a barrel packed with essentials for family, or something more precious like old photographs and family papers - we know it deserves to arrive with care. Our barrel service starts from £85, with a buy-3-get-1-empty-free offer running at the moment, and we're always happy to talk you through the best way to pack and protect what matters most.
